I have decided on what I will do for my major project this year. During the holidays I came up with an idea for an animation for the song "the tuning of violins" by Darren Hayes. At first I wasn't going to make it due to time and what I wanted for a job but something has changed my mind.
And that something is the permission by Darren Hayes himself to use his song in my animation. For those who don't know who he is, Darren Hayes was the lead singer of the Australian band Savage Garden.
Now before Ian and Frank start telling me how hard this will be all the other stuff, I'm going to tell you why I want to do this. 1stly I'm only planning on using about a minute of the song so it won't be as long and i'm also planning on making it just as good as an animation mentor students animation. But this is something that is very close to my heart and finishing this animation and have Darren Hayes go "wow I love this" or any one in fact would mean 10 times more to me than a job offer. Yes i know that this possibly won't get me a job and yes I know this will be hard but I'm willing to put my heart and soul into this animation. Just as Glen Keane said that he felt like he had to animate Ariel to "Part of your world", I feel as though I have to animate to "The turning of violins"
This is exactly why I want to draw and animate, to be able to project my stories to the world and I hope that everyone will support me in my decision :3
Now bring on the hard task!!!

Hey Dana
Any animation you do as a student should be challenging but just outside (above) your skill set. That way you improve. Yup, so no doubt we will advise you that it will be hard. Because we don't want it to be easy. Because you don't learn if it's easy.
I have been saying to other second years to design and plan a narrative for the major project that means something to them. The reason is that you will all be working on it for 2009. It needs to be something that when you go to bed you just can't wait to get up in the morning and animate.
Have you got a link to the song, so I can listen to it?
Congratulations on getting permission from Darren Hayes. I can appreciate it is a real thrill. A brush with celebrity is intoxicating.
No I don't but I'm bringing the song in tomorrow on my usb plus the lyrics so that you, jane and terry can listen to it. I've already started doing character model sheets so I can dive straight into it
The main reason why I'm extreamly happy is because Darren Hayes is my all time favourite artist, so it's even more of a bonus for me!
